Obesity is the most challenging public health issue in the UK, according to researchers. One out of every five residents is officially obese, and three out of four are merely overweight. In a relatively short period of time, Britain has become Europe's fattest nation.
Obesity is also one of the leading causes of preventable death in the UK, just after cancer. As you might expect, the condition is costing the NHS millions of pounds each year in treatments for weight-related disorders. At the top of the list is type II diabetes.
Obesity is a choice. We know that doesn't jibe with the politically correct point of view, but that's too bad. The fact is that no one has to be morbidly obese. That condition is the result of overeating and/or lack of exercise in 99 out of 100 cases. People must be more responsible about the food they put in their own bodies. There are over one hundred thousand new cases of type II diabetes each year. The condition is expensive to treat and it shortens the average person's lifespan by about eight years, the same as smoking cigarettes.
In nine times out of ten cases, type II diabetes is the result of obesity, which means that it is preventable. The NHS currently spends between five and eight hundred million pounds treating weight-related conditions and disorders. It is no surprise then that the NHS announced a 167 billion pound budget deficit in 2009.
